font-weight: bold;\">\u201cHire slow, fire fast.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p>This phrase stuck with me so deeply that<span style=\"color: #0b4068; font-weight: bold;\"> 15 years later, I still remember exactly where I was<\/span> when we had that conversation.<\/p><p>At the time, I didn\u2019t fully understand it. After all, hiring sounded simple enough: interview smart people, choose the best one, move on.<\/p><p>I was wrong.<\/p><p>Over the years, I hired many people across different countries, cultures, and business contexts. And I learned this the hard way:<\/p><p><span style=\"color: #0b4068; font-weight: bold;\">| Hiring is one of the most difficult \u2014 and most consequential \u2014 decisions a leader makes.<\/span><\/p><p>When you do it well, you get a speedboat: agile, fast, and able to win the race. When you do it wrong, you get a clunky boat that might float\u2026 or might never reach the finish line.<\/p><p><span style=\"color: #0b4068; font-weight: bold;\">The real problem with interviews<\/span><\/p><p>Here\u2019s the core issue with hiring:<\/p><ul><li><span style=\"color: #0b4068; font-weight: bold;\">You<\/span>, as the interviewer, want to predict how someone will perform in the future.<\/li><li><span style=\"color: #0b4068; font-weight: bold;\">The candidate<\/span> wants you to believe they are the best possible choice.<\/li><\/ul><p>Different objectives. Limited information. Very little shared context.<\/p><p>That imbalance makes interviews deceptive by default.<\/p><p>You\u2019re trying to see the real person. They\u2019re showing you the best possible version of themselves.<\/p><p>And sometimes, life doesn\u2019t give you the luxury of time.<\/p><p>I\u2019ve been there:<\/p><ul><li>Hiring freezes approaching<\/li><li>Teams overloaded<\/li><li>Fear of losing headcount if you don\u2019t move fast<\/li><\/ul><p>So you hire quickly.<\/p><p>And then, a few months later, it starts:<\/p><ul><li>Comments about behavior<\/li><li>Performance that isn\u2019t stellar<\/li><li>Customers or peers raising concerns<\/li><\/ul><p>Suddenly, instead of leading forward, <span style=\"color: #0b4068; font-weight: bold;\">you\u2019re in performance-management mode<\/span> \u2014 probably the last thing you need when the business is already under pressure.<\/p><p>And the cost is not just emotional: Studies consistently show that a bad hire can cost <span style=\"color: #0b4068; font-weight: bold;\">between 30% and 200% of that person\u2019s annual salary<\/span> when you account for lost productivity, management time, team disruption, customer impact, and re-hiring. At leadership level, the hidden cost is even higher: <span style=\"color: #0b4068; font-weight: bold;\">decisions delayed, trust eroded, and momentum lost<\/span>. Most companies underestimate this cost \u2014 until they live through it.<\/p><p><span style=\"color: #0b4068; font-weight: bold;\">So, what can you do to improve hiring decisions?<\/span><\/p><p>Here are a few principles that changed the way I hire:<\/p><p><span style=\"color: #0b4068; font-weight: bold;\">1. Build a truly diverse interview panel<\/span><\/p><p>Not just diversity on paper. Different personalities. Different functions. Different ways of thinking. And very important: <span style=\"color: #0b4068; font-weight: bold;\">people who are not like you.<\/span><\/p><p>They will see what you don\u2019t. Your own bias is often your silent blind spot in hiring.<\/p><p><span style=\"color: #0b4068; font-weight: bold;\">2. Stop doing 30-minute interviews<\/span><\/p><p>If you really want to know someone, 30 minutes won\u2019t do it.<\/p><p>In my experience, <span style=\"color: #0b4068; font-weight: bold;\">the first 20 minutes<\/span> are just the shell \u2014 the rehearsed pitch the candidate prepared to sell themselves.<\/p><p>Only after that does the real person start to show up.<\/p><p><span style=\"color: #0b4068; font-weight: bold;\">3. Ask unconventional questions<\/span><\/p><p>Questions people didn\u2019t rehearse for.<\/p><p><span style=\"color: #0b4068; font-weight: bold;\">| One of my favorites: \u201cWhat\u2019s a work situation that went really wrong?\u201d<\/span><\/p><p>Most candidates aren\u2019t ready for it. And that\u2019s the point.<\/p><p>The answer tells you a lot:<\/p><ul><li>How they handle stress<\/li><li>How they take responsibility<\/li><li>Whether they learn from mistakes or blame others<\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"color: #0b4068; font-weight: bold;\">4. Use real, uncomfortable cases<\/span><\/p><p>For example:<\/p><p>\u201cIf a project goes off track and we realize there will be impact, how would you manage it internally and with the customer?\u201d<\/p><p>This shows how they think, communicate, and prioritize when things get messy.<\/p><p><span style=\"color: #0b4068; font-weight: bold;\">5. Test team dynamics explicitly<\/span><\/p><p>Ask things like:<\/p><p>\u201cIf you have a conflict with a difficult teammate, how would you handle it?\u201d<\/p><p>Culture shows up in friction \u2014 not in calm moments.<\/p><p><span style=\"color: #0b4068; font-weight: bold;\">Culture fit hiring is the silent deal-breaker<\/span><\/p><p>Finally, and this is critical:<\/p><p>You must be crystal clear about <span style=\"color: #0b4068; font-weight: bold;\">your company\u2019s culture and team priorities.<\/span><\/p><p>A candidate can look amazing on paper and still be the wrong fit.<\/p><p>Skills can be trained.
