This is one of them. And looking back, there\u2019s much I\u2019d do differently. But the insight I gained changed the way I lead forever. And now I know that this happens to many CEOs pushing for cultural change.<\/span><\/div><div data-main-rotation=\"0\">\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"react-pdf__Page__textContent textLayer\" data-main-rotation=\"0\"><p><span class=\"markedContent\"><span class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span style=\"color: #0b4068; font-weight: bold;\" tabindex=\"0\">Facing a Culture Shift \u2014 and the Resistance No One Wanted to See<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><p id=\"ember868\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">When a company wants to grow, its culture must grow too. That means raising expectations, focusing more deeply on customers, and asking the team to level up.<\/p><p id=\"ember869\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">But change isn\u2019t comfortable. Some adapt. Some quietly step away. And some resist\u2014and refuse to see what needs to change.<\/p><p id=\"ember870\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">This isn\u2019t just a CEO\u2019s challenge; anyone leading a team through transformation can face this.<\/p><p>It happened to me. I saw the warning signs even before joining that company. In <span style=\"color: #0b4068; font-weight: bold;\">four out of six interviews<\/span>, leaders asked me:<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"react-pdf__Page css-171\" data-page-number=\"2\"><div class=\"react-pdf__Page__textContent textLayer\" data-main-rotation=\"0\"><p><span class=\"markedContent\"><span class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span style=\"color: #0b4068; font-weight: bold;\" tabindex=\"0\">\u201cWhat would you do if you had to terminate an employee?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><p id=\"ember873\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">It wasn\u2019t casual. It was a warning.<\/p><p id=\"ember874\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">And once inside the company, the reality was clear:<\/p><ul><li>Change was overdue.<\/li><li>One employee immediately moved to another role\u2014he sensed what was coming.<\/li><li>The real challenge was those who firmly rejected the new direction, even though senior leadership agreed that urgent transformation was necessary.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><p><span id=\"p29R_mc36\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span style=\"color: #0b4068; font-weight: bold;\" tabindex=\"0\">When Blame Replaced Accountability<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"markedContent\"><br role=\"presentation\" \/><\/span><\/p><p id=\"ember877\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">What hurt most wasn\u2019t the performance gaps\u2014 <span style=\"color: #0b4068; font-weight: bold;\">it was the refusal to take ownership.&lt;\/span<\/span><\/p><p id=\"ember878\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Some team members decided the problem was me:<\/p><p id=\"ember879\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">\u201cYou don\u2019t understand the company.\u201d \u201cYou don\u2019t understand our customers.\u201d \u201cYou\u2019re asking too much.\u201d<\/p><p id=\"ember880\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">And whenever I brought customer complaints, lost deals, or hard data, the reaction was predictable: <span style=\"color: #0b4068; font-weight: bold;\">excuses, resistance, or blaming me instead of looking inward.<\/span><\/p><p id=\"ember881\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">You can bring every metric, every partner comment, every customer insight\u2026 but data means nothing when someone refuses to look honestly in the mirror.<\/p><p><span id=\"p29R_mc87\" class=\"markedContent\" style=\"color: #0b4068; font-weight: bold;\">Hard Decisions \u2014 and What Happened After <\/span><\/p><p id=\"ember883\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">With support from my manager and HR, we eventually had to part ways with a few team members. It was one of the hardest steps of my career.<\/p><p id=\"ember884\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">But what followed changed everything:<\/p><ul><li>The team rebuilt around shared goals<\/li><li>Customers came back<\/li><li>Performance improved<\/li><li>Partners regained trust<\/li><li>New top performers joined and raised the bar even higher<\/li><\/ul><p id=\"ember886\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The transformation was real.<\/p><p id=\"ember887\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Still, those who left believed <em>I<\/em> was the issue\u2014 not their choices, not their results, not their behavior.<\/p><p id=\"ember888\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">And to be fair, I wasn\u2019t perfect either. I was young. I was learning. But clarity grew from that experience.<\/p><p id=\"ember889\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Today, I believe this deeply:<\/p><p><span style=\"color: #0b4068; font-weight: bold;\">|People deserve to know exactly where the gap is\u2014skills, behaviors, or values\u2014so they can choose to grow or choose to move on. Clarity isn\u2019t punishment. It\u2019s respect.<\/span><\/p><p id=\"ember891\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #0b4068; font-weight: bold;\">Why Blame Happens \u2014 and What Leaders Must Expect<\/span><\/p><p id=\"ember892\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Blame is human. Denial is human. And leading through change means understanding both.<\/p><p id=\"ember893\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Leadership in these moments isn\u2019t about \u201cwinning\u201d with metrics.
